Recently, I’ve been talking to a lot of people, here in Edinburgh, about how Reflexology works. And I’ve been surprised by the number of people who don’t know what it’s about. However, anyone who has actually experienced reflexology, tends to light up and talk effusively about it.
Reflexology is too good a therapy not to know about. So here’s an outline of what it’s about, which will help you to understand why I feel so passionate about it.
How does reflexology work?
Reflexology is a holistic therapy that has been used for thousands of years to improve health and wellbeing.
There are four main types of reflexology:
- Foot reflexology
- Hand reflexology
- Facial reflexology and
- Hot stone reflexology, where heat is introduced to your feet and legs.
In reflexology, the body is mapped onto reflex points in your feet, hands or face. Your whole body is worked on at each reflexology session by massaging these points using specific techniques.
Reflexology can be extremely accurate in pinpointing areas that are out of balance within your body and helping your body to restore that balance. In effect, it helps your body to heal itself.
Getting hooked on reflexology
My own interest in reflexology was sparked at the age of 14 when I saw it being performed on someone. I was amazed that anyone could accurately point to the body’s problem areas by (what looked like) simply tweaking their feet. I was immediately hooked. There and then I decided that I’d learn about it one day, and eventually I did. I’ve been qualified for over 20 years now, and I can categorically say that in my experience no two sets of feet are the same, and the ability of reflexology to help balance areas of congestion within the body, continues to impress me.
In reflexology, we always work on the whole body through the reflexes at each session. One of the first things that most clients experience after reflexology is a deeper sense of relaxation and they tend to sleep well. I’ve also seen it having a positive effect on people who are dealing with the impact of severe stress on their bodies, helping them to feel calmer, more relaxed and more in control.
The best way to understand what reflexology can do for you is to find an experienced reflexologist here in Edinburgh, give it a go, and see what it does for you.
